microsoft exchange migration and dag with f5 load balancer

Microsoft exchange migration and dag with f5 load balancer

Microsoft Exchange migration was a very demanding task as the current Exchange infrastructure involved high availability clustering services from a third party. AGNI’s part was to analyse the infrastructure for migration, design, cabling, implementation and validation.

The key components involved in this engagement were Server Hardware, iSCSI SAN array, F5 load balancers & L3 switches. The load balancers were configured and tested for fail over thus improving the response time and user capacity. A load balancer is a device that acts as a reverse proxy and distributes network or application traffic across a number of servers. Load balancers are used to increase capacity (concurrent users) and reliability of applications. iSCSI SAN array was configured with RAID5 volumes and the volumes were mounted on Exchange servers and tested.

The exchange servers were installed in DAG mode for DB high availability. The entire process involved alpha pilot, beta pilot and final migration. During the alpha pilot phase, test user mailbox was created and validated. Real user’s migration was done during the beta pilot phase and outlook, webmail and active sync devices were tested and validated, backups & restore of the Exchange databases were validated. Final migration involved migration of all users, validation & full backup of the exchange server. Lastly MS exchange performance was tested using MS tools. Eventually the entire engagement was document.
